Best Time to Visit Japan

Japan offers distinct experiences across all four seasons. The best time to visit depends on what you want to see and how much you want to spend.

SpringBest Time

Mild, 10-20°C

Cherry blossom season (late March – early April) is beautiful but expensive. Book hotels 3+ months ahead.

SummerGood

Jun – Aug

Hot & humid, 25-32°C

Rainy season in June, then festivals (Gion Matsuri in Kyoto). Prices drop after August.

AutumnBest Time

Sep – Nov

Cool, 10-22°C

Red maple leaves peak mid-November. The most pleasant weather with fewer crowds than spring.

WinterGood

Dec – Feb

Cold, 0-10°C

Best for skiing in Hokkaido and budget city stays. Hotels in Tokyo drop up to 40% in January.

Flight Tips for Japan

Book 6-8 weeks ahead

International flights to Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) are cheapest when booked 6-8 weeks before departure. Tuesday departures save an average of $60.

Compare Tokyo vs Osaka entry

Flying into Osaka Kansai (KIX) can be $100+ cheaper than Tokyo for Southeast Asian travelers, especially if your main destination is Kyoto.

Get a JR Pass before arrival

The Japan Rail Pass must be purchased outside Japan for the best price. We list active bundle deals that include the pass plus hotels.

Use multi-city for open-jaw

Fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka (or vice versa) to avoid backtracking. This often costs the same as a round-trip to one city.
