1. Book at the Right Time
Hotel pricing follows demand curves. The cheapest booking windows are:
- 3-6 weeks ahead for Asia city hotels (business travel demand drops at weekends)
- 2-3 months ahead for resort destinations during peak season (Bali, Phuket, Maldives)
- Same-day/next-day for cities with high inventory — hotels discount unsold rooms aggressively 24-48 hours before arrival
- Avoid booking on weekends — Friday and Saturday see artificially higher prices from leisure demand
2. Use a Comparison Platform Like Trip.com
Trip.com aggregates prices from hotels directly and through its inventory, often showing prices below the hotel\'s own website. Key advantages:
- Side-by-side comparison of room types and inclusions
- Member prices for logged-in users — typically 10-15% below listed rates
- Flexible date views showing price variation across the month
- Filter by cancellation policy to compare refundable vs. non-refundable rates
3. Apply Promo Codes and Member Discounts
Promo codes can save 5-20% on top of already-listed prices. Trip.com also has a loyalty program (Trip Coins) where you earn rewards on each booking and redeem them toward future stays.
Our promo codes page lists verified active codes with expiry dates. Member prices are unlocked automatically when logged in. The two can often be stacked for combined savings.
4. Compare Non-Refundable vs. Free Cancellation Rates
Non-refundable rates are typically 10-25% cheaper than flexible rates for the same room. If your travel dates are fixed and you are unlikely to cancel, the non-refundable rate is almost always worth it.
The exception: if you are booking 3+ months ahead, a lot can change. Pay the premium for flexibility if there is any chance of cancellation.
5. Look for Meal Inclusion Value
A room at $90 including breakfast is often better value than a room at $75 without breakfast — especially for families or trips to cities where restaurant meals are expensive.
Calculate the all-in cost: if breakfast for two at the destination costs $20-30, a $15 premium for breakfast inclusion is a straightforward saving. Use Trip.com\'s filter for "Breakfast Included" to compare.
6. Be Flexible with Location
Hotels 1-2 subway stops from the main tourist area can be 30-50% cheaper. In Tokyo, a hotel in Ikebukuro costs significantly less than Shinjuku for nearly the same accessibility. In Bangkok, stepping off Sukhumvit onto a side soi cuts prices by 40%.
Use Trip.com\'s map view to identify cheaper hotels near transit hubs. Check the map, not just the destination name, to verify actual proximity.
7. Target Shoulder Season Dates
Prices in the same hotel can vary 50-100% between peak and low season. Traveling 2-3 weeks before or after peak season usually means similar weather but dramatically lower prices.
Example: Tokyo hotels in January cost 40% less than during cherry blossom season in late March. Bali in November is 40-50% cheaper than July-August, with pleasant weather outside of the west coast monsoon.
8. Check Last-Minute Flash Deals
Hotels hate empty rooms. Two to three days before arrival, unsold rooms are often discounted aggressively — sometimes more than any advance booking price. Trip.com\'s "Tonight" deals show same-day inventory.
This strategy works best for flexible travelers in cities with high hotel supply. It is less reliable for resort destinations with limited inventory, or during major holidays when rooms are scarce.
